About Utrecht

Utrecht is one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most vibrant cities, located right at the heart of the country. With its iconic medieval canals, lively wharf cellars, world-class museums, and a compact, walkable city centre, it makes for a wonderful destination — whether you’re visiting for a day or staying longer.

Getting There

Utrecht is exceptionally well connected. Utrecht Centraal station is the largest railway hub in the Netherlands, with direct trains from Amsterdam (roughly 30 minutes), Rotterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, and all major Dutch cities. From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, it’s a direct train ride of about 35–40 minutes.

Highlights

The Dom Tower is Utrecht’s most iconic landmark — at 112 metres, it is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Climb to the top for panoramic views over the city and surrounding region.

The Oudegracht (Old Canal) runs through the heart of the city, lined with unique two-level wharves: the street above and the wharf cellars below, many of which now house cafés, restaurants, and shops. It is unlike anything else in the Netherlands.

The Rietveld Schröder House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of the De Stijl movement, designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld in 1924. Guided tours offer a fascinating glimpse into modernist design.

Kasteel de Haar is the largest castle in the Netherlands, set in beautiful landscaped grounds just outside the city. It’s perfect for a half-day excursion.

The Centraal Museum holds an extensive collection of art and design spanning Utrecht’s history, including works by Jan van Scorel and a dedicated Rietveld collection.

UNESCO World Heritage

The Utrecht region is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

Food & Drink

Utrecht has a lively food scene, from classic Dutch eetcafés to international restaurants, specialty coffee bars, and local markets. The city’s canal-side terraces are especially pleasant on a sunny October afternoon.
